A dry, near cask strength Clarendon from Blackadder’s Raw Cask line, all menthol, mint and herbal-vegetal bite over varnish, citrus and pineapple, with roasted wood and espresso underneath, bottled unsweetened from a single 2007 cask at 65.8%.
Description
Bottled by Blackadder under its unfiltered Raw Cask Rum series, this is a single cask of Clarendon distilled in 2007 and aged thirteen years, drawn from an ex-bourbon barrel at a punchy 65.8%. Clarendon is one of Jamaica's workhorse estates running both pot and column, and this is the pot-still side: a Pure Single Jamaican from the heavy end.
Distilled on the double-retort pot still from molasses, it pours dry and astringent, with intense menthol and mint, herbal and vegetal notes and a streak of solvent over pineapple and citrus. Roasted oak and espresso bitterness anchor the finish. This is unsweetened and uncompromising, and it needs a generous rest in the glass and a few drops of water to open. Built for drinkers who already chase the drier, more medicinal corners of Jamaican pot still.
