Bila-Haut is Michel Chapoutier’s Roussillon estate, and R.I. is a Syrah led red from organic and biodynamic vineyards in the Côtes du Roussillon Villages. Aged 18 months in oak, it shows dark fruit, garrigue herbs and warm spice.
Description
Domaine de Bila-Haut is Michel Chapoutier's estate in Roussillon, in the Agly Valley behind the Mediterranean coast, and R.I. is a Syrah based red from the Côtes du Roussillon Villages. The vineyards grow on the schist and granite soils of the valley, poor and free draining, which restrict the vines and concentrate the fruit. The climate is hot and dry with strong sunlight tempered by the Tramontane wind, which keeps the grapes healthy and the wines fresh despite the warmth. The estate is farmed organically and biodynamically, an approach Chapoutier applies across his sites. The wine is aged 18 months in oak, where measured oxygen contact softens the tannins and adds a savoury, spiced depth around the dark fruit. The colour is deep and dense. The nose carries dark plum, black pepper and the wild garrigue scent of cistus and maquis, with liquorice and a stony, earthy note. The palate is full and warming, with ripe tannins, good freshness and a long peppery, herbal finish. It drinks well now and will hold for several years. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, decant ahead, and pair with grilled lamb or hearty stews.
