Description
Casa Vinicola Bigi has made wine in Orvieto for a century, starting in the old Trinita monastery and now working from a modern winery near Ponte Giulio in Umbria. This is a Classico bottling, from the historic heart of the Orvieto zone, and follows the traditional local recipe as a blend of Trebbiano and Grechetto with Drupeggio, Verdello and Malvasia in support. The vineyards sit on the volcanic and clay soils of central Italy, and the wine is made in a fresh, unoaked style to keep the fruit and acidity to the fore. Fermentation at cool temperature in tank preserves the primary aromatics and the crisp line, with no wood to weigh it down, so it stays light and immediate. Grechetto lends body and a hint of nuttiness while Trebbiano keeps it bright and dry. Expect a pale straw colour, a nose of green apple, pear and hawthorn blossom with a touch of almond, and a light, dry, refreshing palate with a clean finish. Serve it well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees as an aperitif or with light food.
