Description
Big Top Red Zinfandel is a varietal Zinfandel from Lodi, in California, USA, made for everyday drinking. Lodi sits inland in the warm Central Valley, east of San Francisco Bay, where hot days are tempered by cooling evening breezes drawn up from the Delta. That swing lets Zinfandel ripen fully while keeping some freshness, which is why the region is a classic home for the grape. The fruit comes from old vines, which crop low and give concentrated, deeply fruited wine with character specific to the local sandy soils. Zinfandel ripens unevenly and reaches high sugar, giving the ripe, generous style and warming alcohol seen here at 14 percent. This is a young, fruit forward red. Expect a deep ruby colour and a nose of ripe bramble fruit, raspberry, plum and a sweet spiced, peppery edge with a touch of vanilla. The palate is medium to full bodied, with juicy red and dark fruit, soft tannins, gentle cinnamon spice and a warming finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. A good all rounder for entertaining, it suits burgers, ribs and barbecue.
