Bien de Altura makes this organic Canary Islands red from Listán Negro and Listán Prieto grown on volcanic soils. Eight months in barrel give a youthful, smooth red of fresh red fruit, pepper and a mineral, smoky lift.
Description
Bien de Altura makes Ikewen in the Canary Islands, where vines grow on dark volcanic soils under an Atlantic climate that the rest of Spain does not share. The red is built on Listán Negro and Listán Prieto, old island grapes that the cool ocean air and high-altitude vineyards keep fresh, holding alcohol to a modest 12.5%. Volcanic ground drains freely and lends Canary reds their mineral, faintly smoky character, while the maritime breeze stretches ripening and keeps the acidity bright. The vineyard is farmed organically, and the wine spends eight months in barrel, a short ageing that rounds the tannins through slow oxygen exchange while keeping the fruit youthful. The wine is bright, light ruby. The nose shows fresh strawberry and red cherry with black pepper, dried herbs and a smoky, stony note. The palate is delicate and smooth, with red berry fruit, soft tannins and a savoury volcanic finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits roast chicken, grilled pork and fresh goat's cheese.
