Description
Bielle is a Marie Galante distillery known for working with individual cane varieties, and this vieux is built around Canne Grise, a single cultivar bottled here in its reduced form. The fresh pressed cane juice is distilled on a creole column and matured seven years in ex-Bourbon casks, a classic route for aged French-island rum.
Seven years of warm climate ageing usually carries an agricole well past its stated age, layering vanilla, baking spice and toasted oak over the grassy, peppery cane core. Bottled unsweetened at 48 percent, it should read dry and spice forward, the cane variety and the oak both given room rather than masked by sweetness.
