An amber agricole from Bielle on Marie Galante, fresh cane juice given a short rest in oak, earthy, vegetal and peppery with a green, spicy grassiness, a young, savoury cane spirit kept honest at 44%.
Description
Bielle works on Marie Galante from fresh pressed sugar cane juice, an agricole style house under Guadeloupe's IGP. This Ambre sits in the lightly aged tier, the cane juice given a brief spell in oak that tints it amber without burying its raw character, somewhere between a blanc and a properly aged vieux.
The nose is vegetal and earthy with a spicy, grassy edge, and the palate stays peppery, earthy and spicy, the green cane character still very much in charge with only a light wash of wood over it. The profile is savoury and direct rather than sweet or fruity, very much a young agricole showing its origins. At 44% and unsweetened, it is a straightforward, earthy cane juice rum that suits drinkers who like the vegetal, peppery side of agricole, equally at home sipped neat in small measures or lending a grassy backbone to a stirred rum cocktail.
