A 10 year old 2005 Bielle single cask from Marie-Galante, a cask-strength cane-juice agricole bottled high by local custom, layering dried fruit and honeycomb over earthy, vegetal warmth and anise, dry at a bold 55%.
Description
Bielle is a Marie-Galante distillery known for cane-variety experiments and high-proof bottlings, working entirely from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice. This Les Rhums Vieux is a single-cask vieux carrying 10 years in ex-bourbon oak, bottled at cask strength of 55% in the Marie-Galante custom of strong releases, sitting under the Guadeloupe IGP rather than the Martinique AOC.
Distilled on a column still that keeps the green cane character, a decade of tropical ageing has deepened it while leaving it dry. The nose is dried fruit and honeycomb over earthy, vegetal depth, the palate turns flowery, fruity and vegetal with a generous warmth, and the finish stays vegetal with a lift of anise. As a single cask at full proof it carries real concentration and grip, so a little water opens it up. This is a serious, characterful Marie-Galante agricole, dry and spice-forward, rewarding slow sipping.
