A Marie-Galante single cask from Bielle, ten years in ex-bourbon oak softening the island’s punchy cane into red fruit, vanilla and coconut, finishing round and dry with a thread of saffron spice at an easy 45%.
Description
Bielle is one of Marie-Galante's characterful agricole houses, known for cane-variety experiments and high-proof blancs, and this 2005 is a single cask showing the estate in a calmer, aged mood. Distilled from fresh sugar-cane juice on a column still under the Guadeloupe IGP rather than the Martinique AOC, it has spent a decade maturing in ex-bourbon wood.
Tropical ageing has rounded the spirit considerably: the nose leans on red fruit, vanilla and a nutty, candied note, while the palate turns soft and well integrated, vanilla and coconut over a still-present cane backbone. The finish is dry and rounded with a curl of saffron-like spice. Bottled at 45% with no sign of added sugar, it is the gentler, more elegant face of Marie-Galante agricole, a sipper for those who find young island blancs too fierce.
