A thirty three year old Long Pond from Berry Bros and Rudd, old school and elegant, banana and dried fruit easing into tobacco, leather and polished wood, gentle funk and well integrated power at 57% without tipping into a wood bomb.
Description
Berry Bros and Rudd, the long established London merchant, bottled this Long Pond from the 1982 vintage, a single cask at 57% and unsweetened. At thirty three years old it is firmly in old, contemplative territory, the sort of mature Jamaican that trades wild funk for clarity and finesse while keeping the estate's fruit intact.
Molasses fermentation and double retort pot distillation laid the groundwork, and long ageing in ex-bourbon oak has carried it to a refined place. The nose mixes woody depth with dried fruit and a light gluey lift, the palate brings leather, dried fruit and caramel, and the finish settles into leather, dark chocolate, coffee and spice. The wood is present but never dominant, the alcohol seamlessly folded in. This is old school Jamaica, gently funky and beautifully balanced, for drinkers who prize age and integration.
