Beronia Gran Reserva is a Rioja Alta red built from Tempranillo with Graciano and Mazuela from selected old vineyards. It ages 27 months in French oak and 36 in bottle, showing ripe plum, red berries, sweet spice and the leather of long maturation.
Description
Beronia sits in Rioja Alta, the cooler western end of the appellation where higher ground and a moderating Atlantic influence give Tempranillo a longer, slower ripening curve and the firm acidity that underpins a Gran Reserva. The blend leans on Tempranillo, with Graciano adding fragrance and acidity and Mazuela lending colour and grip, all drawn from selected old vineyards on the limestone-rich clay soils that hold water through the dry summer. The wine spends 27 months in French oak followed by 36 in bottle, so the early fruit is gradually folded into savoury, mature character. Slow barrel maturation allows controlled oxygen exchange through the staves, softening tannin and drawing out cedar, clove and vanilla, while the long bottle age before release builds the tertiary leather and tobacco notes that define the style. The colour is a deep garnet with a brick edge. The nose carries ripe plum and red berries over sweet oak spice, leather and dried herbs. The palate is medium to full, with fine resolved tannin, balanced acidity and a long, spiced finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanting an hour ahead, alongside roast lamb or aged Manchego.
