Beronia makes this single varietal Graciano in D.O.Ca. Rioja, a grape usually used for blending. Six months in French oak frame dark berry fruit, black pepper and the fresh acidity and grip that define the variety.
Description
Beronia was founded in 1973 at Ollauri in the Rioja Alta, named after the Berones, a Celtic tribe that lived in Rioja in the third century BC, and has been owned by González Byass since 1982. This wine is a rare single varietal Graciano, a grape usually used in small amounts to add colour, acidity and structure to Rioja blends. On its own it gives a dark, intense red, naturally high in acidity and tannin, with a savoury, herbal character that sets it apart from Tempranillo. The wine ages for six months in 225 litre French oak barrels, a measured maturation that softens the firm tannins and adds a light spice while letting the variety's freshness and fruit lead. It pours a deep, dark ruby and opens with blackberry, dark plum and red berries, backed by black pepper, liquorice and dried herbs over an earthy base. The palate is medium to full bodied, with bright acidity, firm tannins and a long, savoury finish that reflects the grape's natural grip. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It is a good match for grilled and roasted red meats and aged cheese.
