Bernabeleva makes this Garnacha-led red from old vines on granite soils in D.O. Vinos de Madrid. Drawn from several plots and aged 12 months in barrel, it shows red berry, cherry and a peppery, herbal lift.
Description
Navaherreros Garnacha de Bernabeleva is a Grenache-led red from D.O. Vinos de Madrid, made by the Bernabeleva winery in the foothills of the Sierra de Gredos. The wine draws fruit from various plots the winery owns, each with its own soils, exposures and microclimate, so the blend captures a diversity of character. The Gredos foothills are defined by poor granite soils and altitude, which give Garnacha its fresh, perfumed style rather than a heavy one, while the cool nights preserve acidity and lift the aromatics. The vines are old, with deep roots and low yields that concentrate flavour. After fermentation the wine spends 12 months in a range of barrels, where measured oxygen exchange softens the tannin and rounds the texture without overwhelming the bright fruit. The colour is bright ruby. The nose shows red berries and cherry with a floral rose note and an earthy, herbal edge. The palate is light to medium bodied, with fresh acidity, fine tannin and a savoury, peppery finish. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, a touch cool. It suits roast poultry, grilled pork and mushroom dishes.
