Bernabeleva farms Garnacha on granite slopes at San Martín de Valdeiglesias, in the hills west of Madrid. Fourteen months in French oak frame red berry, violet and a savoury, peppery depth.
Description
Garnacha de Viña Bonita is made by Bodegas Bernabeleva in San Martín de Valdeiglesias, in the D.O. Vinos de Madrid, a winery founded in 1923 and known for its careful work with old Garnacha. The vineyards lie on the granite slopes of the Sierra de Gredos foothills west of Madrid, where the sandy, free-draining granite soils and the altitude give the wine its lift and fine, perfumed character. The wide diurnal range, with hot days and cold mountain nights, slows ripening and preserves the acidity and floral aromatics that mark high-altitude Gredos Garnacha. The wine is aged fourteen months in French oak, which adds a restrained spice frame and softens the tannins through slow oxygen exchange while keeping the fruit fresh. The colour is a medium ruby. The nose is complex and savoury, with red berries and cherry over violet, crushed herbs, black pepper and a faint meaty, broth-like depth. The palate is medium bodied and elegant, with bright acidity, fine silky tannin and a long, mineral, savoury finish. Serve at 15 to 17 degrees, decanted briefly. It suits roast lamb, game and mushroom dishes.
