Bodegas Los Bermejos grows this dry Malvasía in the volcanic La Geria zone of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. Made with minimal intervention, it is aromatic yet firmly dry, with white flowers, apricot and a saline, volcanic finish.
Description
Los Bermejos works in La Geria, the volcanic heart of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, where vines are grown in hollows scooped into black volcanic ash and sheltered from the trade winds by low stone walls. The porous ash acts as a mulch, trapping the scarce overnight moisture and feeding the ungrafted vines through a landscape that sees almost no rain. This dry Malvasía Volcánica is made with minimal intervention, so the fruit and the site come through clearly. Malvasía is naturally aromatic, and picking to retain freshness keeps the wine firmly dry rather than heavy or sweet. Fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature protects the delicate floral aromatics and the primary fruit, while the volcanic soil leaves a distinct saline, mineral thread through the wine. The colour is pale lemon with green tints. The nose is expressive, with white flowers, apricot, citrus peel and a rose-petal lift. The palate is dry and clean, the stone fruit framed by fresh acidity and a salty, mineral finish that reflects the ash soils. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It suits grilled prawns, fried fish and light salads.
