Description
Los Bermejos is a leading producer on Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands, where vines grow in the extraordinary volcanic landscape of the La Geria valley. The soils are black volcanic ash and lava, laid down after the 18th-century Timanfaya eruptions, and each vine is planted in its own hollow to reach the moisture below and sheltered from the wind by a low stone wall. This volcanic terroir gives the wine a mineral, faintly smoky character that is unique to the islands. The grape is Listán Negro, a Canary native, made here by carbonic maceration, in which whole clusters ferment in a sealed tank under carbon dioxide before pressing. This technique produces bright, juicy fruit, soft tannins and a lifted aromatic profile, and the wine is vegan. The colour is a bright, light ruby, with aromas of fresh red berries and cherry over black pepper, florals and a smoky volcanic note. The palate is light and fresh, with low tannin, lively acidity and an earthy mineral finish. This is a red to enjoy young and lightly chilled at 13 to 15 degrees, with lighter dishes or on its own.
