Description
Bodegas Los Bermejos is one of Lanzarote's best-known wine families and has been the island's benchmark producer since it resurfaced in 2001. This is their Diego Seco, a dry white from the native Diego grape, also called Vijariego Blanco, farmed organically. Lanzarote is one of the most striking places to grow vines anywhere: the vineyards sit in the black volcanic ash left by eighteenth-century eruptions, each vine planted in its own hollow and often ringed by a low stone wall to shelter it from the trade winds and trap the night moisture. That porous volcanic ground drains fast and holds no disease, and it gives the wine a clear mineral, smoky character. The Atlantic climate keeps it fresh, and the wine is made young and unoaked so the volcanic site comes through directly. The colour is pale with green tints. The nose is bright and mineral, with lemon, green apple and citrus peel over white flowers and a smoky, flinty note. The palate is dry and taut, saline and fresh, with a clean, stony finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
