Description
Berentzen Saurer Apfel is an apple liqueur from the Berentzen house in Lower Saxony, a German distiller since 1758. Finely distilled wheat grain meets crisp fresh apples, the careful selection giving a natural freshness and a harmonious balance of sweet and sour, bottled at 16%. It conquered the German party scene in the 1990s on that sweet and sour appeal and remains a recognised name.
The nose is fruity and crisp with apple, the palate sour, fruity and clearly apple led, long on the palate. Behind the bar it delivers bright apple flavour and a tart acidity that sharpens a drink, the backbone of an apple sour and a quick lift for a fizz. It is made to be poured ice cold as a shot, and it refines juices, sparkling wine and lemonades into a refreshing long drink. Serve it well chilled so the sour apple stays crisp.
