BenRiach 42 Years Old 1966 Cask #1019 (Signatory)

BenRiach sits on the Elgin plain in Speyside, founded in 1898 by John Duff. Through much of the late 20th century the distillery operated quietly as a filler for Chivas blends, with single malt releases rare until the Billy Walker era from 2004 onwards. The casks from this period are now finite, held mostly by independent merchants who laid them down when the stock was originally destined for blending. This release was bottled by Signatory Vintage, the independent Edinburgh bottler founded by Andrew Symington in 1988 and now based at Edradour distillery. Signatory's labels disclose cask number, fill date and bottling date in full. It sits in the Cask Strength Collection, a single cask programme bottled at natural strength. Cask #1019, distilled in 1966 and bottled in 2008, yielded an outturn of just 175 bottles for the French market.

BenRiach distils on two pairs of copper pot stills, with ogee-shaped wash stills feeding onion-shaped spirit stills under steam heat. Fermentation runs between 48 and 100 hours in stainless steel washbacks on Mauri liquid yeast, with new make collected at 68% ABV before filling to cask. After 42 years in oak, the cask was bottled at 43.9% ABV, a natural cask strength reflecting the long evaporation.

American oak (Quercus alba) is high in whisky lactones (cis- and trans-beta-methyl-gamma-octalactone) and breaks down under charring to release vanillin and syringaldehyde from the lignin. Whether ex-Bourbon or first-fill, American oak typically contributes coconut, vanilla and honeyed sweetness to the BenRiach.
