Description
Mazzei makes Belguardo Vermentino in coastal Tuscany, under the IGP Toscana designation. Vermentino is a Mediterranean grape that needs warmth and strong sun, and it thrives along the Tyrrhenian coast, where sea breezes and cool nights keep the ripe fruit fresh. The vines grow on soils that carry the marine and mineral character of this coastal strip, giving the wine a saline lift alongside its fruit. The wine is aged on its lees, the spent yeast left after fermentation. Time on the lees adds a little weight and a fine texture, filling out the mid-palate while the wine stays unoaked and driven by clear fruit. It pours pale straw with green tints, with a nose of lemon, white peach, pear and white flowers over a herbal, saline note typical of coastal Vermentino. The palate is dry and medium bodied, with citrus and stone fruit, a rounded texture from the lees and fresh acidity carrying a clean, faintly bitter almond finish. Serve chilled at 9 to 11 degrees in a white-wine glass.
