Belguardo Bronzone is a Sangiovese from the hills of Scansano on the Tuscan coast, made by the Mazzei family. This Morellino di Scansano Riserva spends 14 months in French oak, showing sour cherry, plum and dried herb over a savoury core.
Description
Belguardo Bronzone comes from the hilly Morellino di Scansano zone in the province of Grosseto, on the southern Tuscan coast where the Mazzei family farm. Morellino is the local name for Sangiovese, and in this warm, sea-influenced corner of the Maremma it ripens more fully than in the cooler Chianti hills, giving a rounder, riper style while keeping the variety's defining acidity and savour. The galestro and clay soils and the maritime breeze shape the wine's structure and freshness. As a Riserva, it spends 14 months in French oak barrels, where measured oxygen exchange softens the tannins, builds complexity and adds a frame of spice without masking the fruit. It pours a deep ruby red. The nose is savoury and classic, with sour cherry and plum lifted by dried herbs, leather and an earthy undertone. The palate is medium to full bodied, with the bright acidity and firm but ripe tannins typical of Sangiovese, and a long finish carrying liquorice and a stony edge. The acidity makes it a natural with food. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. It suits roast lamb, grilled beef and tomato-rich Tuscan cooking.
