Description
Begali Lorenzo is a third generation family winery in Cengia, in the historic Classico heartland of Valpolicella in the Veneto. The 12 hectares sit on hills and foothills between Lake Garda and Verona, where limestone and clay soils and the moderating lake influence give a long, even ripening that keeps acidity fresh. The blend is led by Corvina with Rondinella and other local red varieties, the traditional Valpolicella combination that supplies sour cherry fruit and a savoury backbone. This is the classic, unaged expression: fermented and held in stainless steel for around three months, with no oak, so the wine keeps its bright primary fruit and a light, drinkable frame. Respectful viticulture is practised in the vineyard. The colour is medium ruby. The nose leads with cherry and red berries over dried herbs and a touch of pepper, and the palate is light bodied and fresh, with soft tannin, lifted acidity and an earthy, faintly bitter close typical of Corvina. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, in a standard red glass, no decanting needed. It suits everyday pasta, roast chicken and mushroom dishes.
