Ramon Jané makes this natural rosé in the Penedès from Merlot and Macabeo, aged six months on its lees. The low-intervention winemaking gives a pale, savoury wine with red currant, citrus and a yeasty texture from the lees contact.
Description
Ramon Jané works in the Penedès in Catalonia, making wines with minimal intervention under his Baudili label. This rosat blends red Merlot with white Macabeo, a field-style mix that keeps the wine light and fresh. The Penedès sits inland from Barcelona, with limestone and clay soils and a Mediterranean climate tempered by altitude and sea breezes, which helps hold acidity in the grapes. The wine is made naturally, with native yeasts and no added cultured ferments, then aged for around six months on its fine lees. Lees ageing slowly releases mannoproteins and yeast compounds that build texture and a faint bready character while protecting the wine without heavy sulphur. The colour is pale pink with a slight haze typical of unfiltered natural wine. The nose shows red berries, red currant and citrus peel with white flowers and a yeasty, fresh dough note from the lees. The palate is dry, savoury and textured, with green apple acidity and a clean finish. Serve chilled at 9 to 11 degrees. It works as an aperitif and with fresh fish, salads and light tapas.
