Bass Phillip grows Gamay in Gippsland, in cool coastal Victoria, one of the few Australian producers working with the variety. Farmed biodynamically and vegan, this 2021 is light and fresh, with bright cherry, raspberry and a savoury, floral lift.
Description
Bass Phillip works in Gippsland, a cool, maritime corner of southern Victoria better known for Pinot Noir, where Phillip Jones planted Gamay, the red grape of Beaujolais and an unusual choice in Australia. The cool climate and long, even ripening season suit the variety, keeping alcohol moderate at 13.8 per cent and preserving the bright acidity and fresh red fruit that define good Gamay. Farming is biodynamic and the wine is vegan. The grapes are fermented and the wine aged in barrel, but the emphasis stays on transparent, primary fruit rather than oak, with gentle handling to keep the wine light and supple. The colour is a bright, clear red. The nose shows fresh cherry and raspberry with a floral, rose-petal lift and a savoury, peppery edge. The palate is light and refreshing, with soft tannins, lively acidity and a clean finish. A wine that suits being served slightly cool. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees with lighter meats and vegetable dishes.
