Basilisco makes Teodosio from organically farmed Aglianico on the volcanic slopes of Monte Vulture in Basilicata. Twelve months in oak give a deep ruby red with forest fruit, plum and a stony, savoury character true to the grape.
Description
Basilisco farms Aglianico around Barile, on the volcanic slopes of the extinct Monte Vulture in Basilicata, a remote part of the Italian south with a long history etched into its tuff stone caves. The estate, part of the Tenute Capaldo group, works organically here. Aglianico del Vulture is the highland expression of the grape, grown on dark volcanic soils at altitude where cool nights and a long autumn ripening season build structure while keeping the acidity firm. The wine is aged twelve months in oak barrels and a further twelve in bottle. The barrel time softens Aglianico's naturally high tannins through slow oxygen exchange and adds a light spice frame, while the extended bottle ageing lets the fruit and mineral elements settle before release. The colour is ruby red with violet highlights. The nose shows forest fruits, black cherry and plum over dried herbs, black pepper and a clear volcanic, stony note. The palate is full bodied and structured, with fresh acidity, firm but ripe tannins and a savoury, earthy finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanting ahead. It suits roast and grilled red meats, lamb, mushroom dishes and aged cheeses.
