Baroni di Pianogrillo grows organic Frappato in southern Sicily, between Modica and Chiaramonte. A pale, fragrant red, it shows fresh red berries, cherry and floral lift with a light, easy structure.
Description
Lorenzo Piccione di Pianogrillo farms organically on his estate between Modica and Chiaramonte, in the south-east of Sicily, an area known for its agricultural quality. This is a varietal Frappato, a native Sicilian grape prized for fragrance and lightness rather than weight. Grown on the warm but ventilated hills of the interior, where altitude and sea breezes moderate the Mediterranean heat, the grape keeps its bright acidity and delicate aromatics. Calcareous soils suit the variety and reinforce its freshness. Frappato is typically vinified to preserve its primary character, with little or no oak, so the wine keeps its pale colour and lifted perfume. The result is bright translucent ruby. The nose is floral and fruity, with fresh strawberry and red cherry, redcurrant and a note of violet and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is light and juicy, with crunchy red fruit, soft tannin, fresh acidity and a clean, faintly peppery finish at a moderate 12.5 percent. This is a sociable, food-friendly red. Serve it slightly cool, at 14 to 16 degrees, which lifts the aromatics. It is a natural partner for lighter dishes, antipasti and tomato-based cooking.
