Baroni Di Pianogrillo grows this organic Nero d’Avola in the Iblei hills of south east Sicily and ages it only in steel. Unoaked and fresh, it shows bright cherry, red berries and a herbal, peppery lift.
Description
Baroni Di Pianogrillo farm an old estate in the Iblei mountains near Chiaramonte, in the hills of the former Modica county in south eastern Sicily. Lorenzo Piccione di Pianogrillo converted the property to organic farming and began making his own wines in 2014, and this Deracine is a varietal Nero d'Avola, the island's signature red grape. The high, breezy hillside vineyards and the limestone rich soils give the fruit freshness and lift, tempering the warmth of the Sicilian climate. The wine is fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel, with no oak contact at all, a deliberate choice that keeps the fruit pure and the style bright and unadorned. The temperature controlled tanks preserve aromatics and the grape's natural red fruit character. In the glass it is a vivid ruby, with fresh cherry, red berries and plum on the nose, lifted by dried Mediterranean herbs, a peppery note and a touch of earth. The palate is medium bodied with soft tannins, juicy fruit and a fresh, clean finish. This is an easy, food friendly red best served slightly cool at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits everyday cooking from grilled pork to tomato based pasta.
