Description
Baroni Di Pianogrillo is the estate of Lorenzo Piccione di Pianogrillo, the last descendant of the family, working in the province of Ragusa in southern Sicily. Cerasuolo di Vittoria is the island's only DOCG and the only wine of its type made from a set blend of Frappato and Nero d'Avola. Frappato brings perfume, red fruit and a light, fragrant frame, while Nero d'Avola adds colour, body and darker fruit. The vineyards sit on the warm, calcareous and sandy soils of south-eastern Sicily, where daytime heat is tempered by coastal breezes that preserve aromatics and acidity. The wine is organically farmed and aged for twelve months in foudres, large old oak casks whose low surface-to-volume ratio allows slow, gentle maturation and softening of tannin without adding overt oak flavour. The colour is bright cherry red, the origin of the name Cerasuolo. The nose shows red cherry, wild strawberry, rose and white pepper with an earthy note. The palate is medium-light, fresh and silky, with soft tannin and bright acidity. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. It pairs with roast pork, poultry, tomato-based pasta and mushroom dishes.
