Description
Baron de Ley Blanco is a white from D.O.Ca. Rioja, made by the Baron de Ley winery at Mendavia in Navarra, a house set up in the 1980s to make wines in a classic style. It works from over 400 hectares of vineyards across the denomination, from Rioja Alavesa down to Rioja Baja, so the grapes can be matched to the microclimate that suits them. The blend is led by Viura, the region's main white grape, with a share of Malvasia for aroma. Rioja's whites depend on picking early enough to keep acidity, since Viura ripens quickly and can lose freshness in the warmth of the Ebro valley. Fermentation is cool and clean in stainless steel, with no oak, to keep the focus on primary fruit. The colour is pale lemon with green glints. The nose is green apple and citrus, with a light floral touch and a hint of white peach. The palate is dry and lively, the acidity fresh and the finish clean and citrus driven. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees.
