Barón de Ley makes this white Rioja Reserva from Viura, Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía grown across the denomination. Twelve months in American oak give a golden colour, ripe orchard fruit, toasted almond and a creamy, savoury depth.
Description
Barón de Ley farms more than 400 hectares across Rioja, from the cooler Alavesa to the warmer Rioja Baja, and sources the three grapes for this Reserva from separate parcels suited to each variety. Viura provides the structural spine and citrus, Garnacha Blanca adds weight and orchard fruit, and Malvasía lends aromatic lift. The wine spends twelve months in American oak, which contributes vanilla, coconut and a toasted character, while the extended contact with lees builds a rounder, creamier texture through the slow release of mannoproteins. The oxidative exchange across the barrel staves softens the acidity and pushes the colour towards deep gold. It pours golden yellow, with a nose of ripe pear, quince, toasted almond and sweet spice over a savoury base. The palate is broad and dry, carrying baked apple, hazelnut and a gentle oak grip into a long, nutty finish. This is a classic barrel aged Rioja white built for the table rather than the aperitif. Serve at 11 to 12 degrees in a full white glass. Good with roast chicken, grilled pork and hard sheep cheeses.
