Barco del Corneta works from the old apothecary at La Seca in Valladolid, a village better known for Verdejo. This red field blend of Bobal, Garnacha and Tempranillo spends fifteen months in oak barrels and shows red berries, cherry and a savoury, earthy edge.
Description
Barco del Corneta is based in the restored apothecary of La Seca, a small village in Valladolid within Castilla y León long associated with the white Verdejo grape. This organic red turns instead to a blend led by Bobal, Garnacha and Tempranillo, grown on the sandy, lime-rich soils of the high Castilian plateau. The altitude here brings cool nights that follow warm days, and that wide diurnal range slows ripening, holding fresh acidity and aromatic lift while the fruit reaches full flavour. The wine is aged for fifteen months in oak barrels. That time in cask allows slow oxygen exchange through the wood, softening the tannins and adding a fine layer of spice and vanilla without masking the fruit. The colour is a bright cherry red. The nose leads with red berries, ripe cherry and plum over a savoury, earthy base, with light pepper and oak spice behind. The palate is medium bodied and supple, the acidity keeping it fresh and the tannins fine grained. Serve at around 16 degrees, in a standard red glass. It suits roast chicken, grilled pork and mushroom dishes.
