Description
Barco del Corneta Las Envidias comes from Beatriz Herranz, who returned to her family vineyards at La Seca in Valladolid in 2008 to work the local white grapes on their own terms. The fruit here is Palomino, grown on the sandy soils of Cantarranas, shot through with pebbles over a clay base. The sand gives a light, mineral wine with modest yields, while the pebbles hold daytime warmth and aid even ripening; the underlying clay keeps water in reserve through a dry central Spanish summer. All the farming is organic. The wine spends twelve months in French oak barrels, and the slow oxygen exchange through the wood, together with time on its lees, builds a savoury, textured palate rather than an overtly oaky one. Palomino is a naturally low-acid, oxidation-tolerant grape, and that character shows as a nutty, almost saline depth. Expect a pale gold colour, a nose of green apple, pear and toasted almond, and a broad, dry palate with beeswax, citrus peel and a salty finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a full white glass.







Additional information
Pour it with grilled hake, seared scallops or a plate of prawns, where the saline, nutty character stands in for a squeeze of lemon. It also holds its own against roast chicken and aged Manchego or a hard nutty cheese.
