Description
Barco del Corneta is Beatriz Herranz's project at La Seca in Valladolid, better known for Verdejo, here working the red grape Juan Garcia as a Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y Leon. The vines grow organically at the Cantarranas site on sandy soils full of boulders, over clay and limestone, which lend the wine freshness and a fine mineral edge. Juan Garcia is a light, aromatic variety with bright acidity and a floral character. The wine ages fourteen months in French oak barrels, whose slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds gentle spice while keeping the fresh fruit clear. The colour is bright, light ruby. The nose shows red cherry, raspberry and red currant with violet and a peppery, herbal note. The palate is light to medium bodied and fresh, with brisk acidity, fine tannin and a stony, savoury finish. This is a red built on freshness and perfume rather than weight. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. It pairs with charcuterie, roast poultry and grilled vegetables, and suits mushroom dishes.
