Description
Barco del Corneta is the project of Beatriz Herranz, who returned to her family's vineyards in La Seca, Valladolid, in 2008 to make serious, terroir-focused Verdejo in a region better known for simple, aromatic whites. This wine, made without a denomination of origin, comes from the Cantarranas site, where the soils are sandy and full of pebbles over clay and limestone. The sand gives finesse and a fine texture, while the limestone lends structure and a saline lift. The vines are farmed organically, and at 14 percent the wine reflects a fuller, riper style of Verdejo. It is aged twelve months in 500-litre French oak barrels, a larger format that gives a gentler oxygen exchange and less overt wood character than a standard barrel, so the oak lends texture, toast and a light vanilla rather than dominating. Extended time on the lees adds weight and a creamy, doughy note. The wine is deep straw to gold, with white peach, fresh dough and almond on the nose over vanilla and citrus peel. The palate is full and textured, with balancing acidity and a long, nutty finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees, ideally decanted.

Additional information
The oak and texture give this the weight for baked white fish, roast chicken and creamy poultry dishes. It also pairs with aged hard cheese and mushroom dishes, where the toasty, nutty character finds an echo.
