Barco del Corneta Cucú is an organic Verdejo from La Seca and Aldeanueva del Codonal, fermented with indigenous yeasts. Vines sit at around 750 metres, and eight months on lees in steel and barrel give ripe apple, a herbal edge and quiet depth.
Description
Cucú is Barco del Corneta's fresher, more approachable Verdejo, drawn from vineyards in La Seca in Valladolid and Aldeanueva del Codonal in Segovia, within Castilla y León. The farming is organic and the wine ferments from indigenous yeasts, which lends complexity and ties the flavour to the site. The vines grow at around 750 metres on the region's sandy, stony soils. That altitude drives a wide day to night temperature swing, so the grapes keep acidity and green, herbal aromatics as they ripen, while the poor soils rein in yields. Fermentation with wild yeasts is followed by eight months on the lees in a combination of stainless steel and barrel. The lees contact and slow oxygen exchange through the barrel build texture, weight and a subtle savoury depth without an overt oak character, and regular stirring rounds the palate. The wine is a vibrant pale gold. The nose shows ripe apple, white peach and citrus over fresh herbs and a hint of almond. The palate is dry and textured, with the freshness of Verdejo backed by lees driven breadth through a long, mineral finish. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees. It suits fish, poultry and hard cheeses.
