Bàrbara Forés makes this Terra Alta red from Garnacha with some Syrah and Cariñena, grown at 350 to 600 metres around Gandesa. Fermented in steel and aged 12 months in French Allier oak, it shows red berries, garrigue herbs and a peppery, savoury core.
Description
Bàrbara Forés Negre is a red from D.O. Terra Alta in inland Catalonia, led by Garnacha Negra with smaller amounts of Syrah and Carignan. The vineyards lie at 350 to 600 metres around Gandesa, where altitude brings cooler nights and a wide diurnal swing that keeps acidity firm and the fruit fresh in a warm, dry region. The vines are grown with only natural products in the vineyard. The harvest is manual, gathered between the middle and end of September. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, which preserves the bright fruit and lets the blend speak clearly, before the wine is aged 12 months in French Allier oak. Allier gives a fine, tight grain and a slow, gentle oxygen exchange that rounds the tannins and adds a subtle spice without heavy wood flavour. Garnacha brings red fruit and warmth, Syrah colour and pepper, Carignan grip and a savoury edge. The colour is deep ruby, the nose offering red berries and plum, black pepper, dried herbs and liquorice. The palate is medium to full bodied, fresh and structured, with a long, herbal finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits lamb, beef and mushroom dishes.
