Bàrbara Forés grows Garnacha Blanca in Terra Alta, an inland Catalan appellation of high vineyards and stony soils. Three months on lees give a textured, dry white with ripe pear, fennel, white flowers and a saline, herbal finish.
Description
Bàrbara Forés is a family winery in Gandesa, in the D.O. Terra Alta of inland Catalonia, working 22 hectares across a range of altitudes and orientations under organic practice. Garnacha Blanca is the region's signature white grape, and the warm continental climate tempered by altitude ripens it fully while retaining acidity through cool nights. After fermentation the wine rests three months on its fine lees, which adds body and a subtle savoury depth as the spent yeast cells break down and release mannoproteins. There is no oak, so the fruit and the stony character of the vineyard stay to the front. It shows pale straw with green tints, a nose of ripe pear, apple, fennel and white flowers, and a hint of Mediterranean scrub. The palate is dry and textured, with stone fruit, a saline mineral streak and gentle herbal bitterness carrying a long finish. This is a food white with real weight and freshness. Serve at 9 to 10 degrees. It works well with grilled white fish, roast vegetables and fresh goat cheese.
