A gentle 8 Year Old Haitian cane-juice rum from Barbancourt, lighter than raw clairin, with sugarcane, vanilla and honey on the nose giving way to oak, caramel and pepper, an approachable, unsweetened sipper at 43%.

Description
Barbancourt is Haiti's best known rum house and an unusual one, distilling from fresh sugar-cane juice like the country's village clairins but in a far more refined, aged style, so this Reserve Speciale is a world away from the raw, wild-ferment Haitian spirits. At eight years old it offers a gentle, polished route into Haitian cane-juice rum without the aggressive funk or high proof.
The nose carries light sugarcane, vanilla, honey and a faint herbaceous, vegetal edge, while the palate turns to oak, caramel and a peppery, spicy grip from its time in ex-bourbon wood. Bottled unsweetened at 43%, it is balanced and easygoing, the cane freshness and the oak meeting on a moderate finish. For a drinker moving from sweeter molasses rums toward cane-juice styles, it makes an affordable, approachable bridge that still shows real character.
