Description
Barbadillo revolutionised the Andalusian market more than thirty years ago with Castillo de San Diego, the first white wine produced in the province, and this Barbadillo Blanco is its successor and the winery's flagship still white. It is made entirely from Palomino Fino, the grape behind Sherry, grown as a table wine near Sanlúcar de Barrameda in the V.T. Cádiz. The vineyards lie close to the Atlantic on the pale albariza and sandy soils of the coast, where cooling sea breezes and the chalk's ability to hold water keep the fruit fresh under the strong southern sun, and give the wine its saline edge. The wine is made young and unoaked, so nothing stands between the grape and the coast, and it is bottled early to keep its freshness. The colour is pale yellow with green highlights. The nose is bright, with lemon, lime and citrus peel over white flowers and a light saline note. The palate is dry, crisp and easy, with green apple and pear and a clean, coastal finish. This is a wine to drink young and cold. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees.
