Description
Barahonda is the oldest winery in Yecla, in the Murcia region of south-eastern Spain, and sources this organic white from its own vineyards, some 150 hectares of estate land backed by a wider area farmed under its technical team. The wine blends Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc, two aromatic varieties that bring citrus, green fruit and a herbal edge. Yecla has a strongly continental climate, with cold winters that can fall below zero and dry summers reaching 40 degrees, so the vineyards rely on the drop in night-time temperature at altitude to hold acidity and aromatic freshness in the fruit. The grapes are picked in the cool of the harvest and fermented at low temperature in stainless steel to protect their aromatics, with no oak. The colour is pale with green glints. The nose is intense and fresh, with green apple, pear and a hint of pineapple lifted by white flowers and a thyme-like herbal note. The palate is light and dry, its aromatic fruit carried by crisp acidity to a clean finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It suits white fish, salads, fresh cheeses and roast chicken.
