Description
Barahonda Barrica is a red from D.O. Yecla, made by Señorío de Barahonda in the northeast of Murcia. It blends Monastrell, around three quarters, with Syrah. This is a warm, dry inland region where high summer heat ripens Monastrell fully, building ripe fruit, depth and alcohol, while the clay, sandy loam and limestone soils help retain water through the drought. The wine is macerated over a long period at a constant 25 degrees to draw colour and structure from the skins, then rested 6 months in French oak and a further six months in bottle before release. The oak adds vanilla, sweet spice and rounded tannin through slow oxygen exchange. The colour is deep and dark. The nose is ripe, with dark plum and black fruit over black pepper, liquorice, a smoky note and dark chocolate. At 14.5 percent the palate is full and warming, with soft, ripe tannin, balanced acidity and a long, spicy finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. Good with grilled and roast meats and richly spiced dishes.
