Vinyes Domènech makes this organic Montsant red from Garnacha, Cariñena, Cabernet and Syrah grown at 450 to 500 metres. Six months in French and American oak frame ripe red fruit, spice and a stony freshness.
Description
Vinyes Domènech farms in a protected natural space between the Llaberia and Montalt mountains at Capçanes, in the southern reach of D.O. Montsant. Bancal del Bosc blends Garnacha and Cariñena, the region's traditional grapes, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The vines sit at 450 to 500 metres on deep soils across a slope, and the altitude brings cool nights and a wide diurnal range that slows ripening, holding acidity while the fruit develops, so the wine keeps its freshness despite the Mediterranean warmth. The winery is certified organic by the Catalan organic farming authority. After fermentation the wine spends six months in French and American oak barrels, enough to round the tannins and add a light frame of spice without masking the fruit. It pours deep ruby and opens with raspberry, blackberry and ripe cherry, backed by black pepper, liquorice and a stony, earthy note from the hillside soils. The palate is structured and balanced, with firm but ripe tannins and a fresh, savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It is a good match for grilled and roasted meats.
