Baigorri makes this Rioja rosé in Samaniego from Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura. Cool fermentation on its own lees in stainless steel, with oxidation kept to a minimum, gives a pale pink wine of ripe strawberry, raspberry and citrus.
Description
Bodegas Baigorri sits in the village of Samaniego in Rioja Alavesa, in the cooler, higher western part of the appellation under the Sierra de Cantabria. This rosé blends Tempranillo and Garnacha with the white grape Viura. The fruit is sorted on tables and destemmed, then fermented at a low temperature of 15 to 20 degrees in stainless steel tanks with selected yeasts and kept on its own lees, which adds a little texture and roundness to a fresh, light style. The wine is filtered and clarified and handled to minimise oxidation as far as possible, so the emphasis stays on bright primary fruit. The altitude and limestone-influenced soils of Rioja Alavesa give the natural acidity that underpins the style. The colour is pale pink. The nose is clean and fruit driven, with ripe strawberry and raspberry lifted by a citrus note. The palate is dry, fresh and crisp, with a fine lees-given texture and a clean, lemony finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It works as an aperitif and with white fish, shellfish and roast chicken.
