Baigorri makes this single-vineyard Tempranillo from Finca Las Navas in Rioja Alavesa. Six months in oak give an intense cherry-red wine with ripe plum, dark fruit and a fresh, classically structured palate.
Description
Baigorri Finca Las Navas comes from the Baigorri estate in Samaniego, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, made from Tempranillo grown on a single vineyard within D.O.Ca. Rioja. Rioja Alavesa sits in the cooler, higher reaches of the appellation, on clay-limestone soils at altitude under an Atlantic-Mediterranean climate. The calcareous soils and elevation give wines with bright acidity, fine tannin and the freshness for which the sub-zone is known, and a single-vineyard site like Las Navas concentrates that character. The wine matures six months in oak barrels, a measured maturation that rounds the tannins and adds a light vanilla and toast frame while keeping the focus on ripe, primary fruit rather than heavy oak. The colour is intense cherry red with violet undertones. The nose is potent, with ripe plum and dark fruit lifted by sweet spice and a savoury, earthy edge. The palate is medium to full bodied, with fine, fresh tannin, balanced acidity and a long, classically Riojan finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It is a natural match for lamb and grilled red meats.
