A cask-strength vieux from Baie des Tresors on Martinique, unsweetened at 52.2%, pairing fresh cane and honeyed sweetness with cinnamon, pear and dried apricot over firm oak tannins, a dry, contemplative sipper.
Description
Baie des Tresors is a Martinique producer working in the AOC tradition, and this 2019 vieux is bottled at cask strength, 52.2%, distilled from fresh-pressed sugar cane juice with no added sugar. It pairs the freshness of cane juice with serious wood influence.
The nose is inviting, with fresh agricole character, honeyed sweetness, cinnamon, pear and dried apricot. The palate turns notably drier, the oak tannins taking over with a firm, slightly bitter grip alongside the fresh cane and allspice. The finish is woody and tannic. This is a rum built around the contrast between sweet-smelling fruit and a dry, oak-driven mouth, best treated as a contemplative neat pour. For drinkers who enjoy drier, tannic agricole and want fresh cane with real barrel bite at a fair price, it shows a promising aged profile.
