Azul y Garanza makes this natural, organic clarete in Navarra from red and white Garnacha, aged in clay amphorae. The old-style field blend gives a deeper-coloured, fruity rosé of red berries, cherry and a savoury, earthy grip.
Description
Azul y Garanza farm organically in Navarra in northern Spain, where María, Fernando and Dani revive clarete, a traditional rosé made by co-fermenting red and white grapes together. Here it blends red Garnacha tinta with white Garnacha blanca, a style once dismissed but now valued for its texture and depth. Navarra has a continental climate with hot days and cool nights, and the diurnal range keeps freshness in grapes that ripen fully. The wine is made naturally with native yeasts and aged for around four months in clay amphorae. The unglazed clay allows slow micro-oxygenation, much like large old wood, softening the wine and adding savoury complexity while the porous walls help build texture without adding flavour. Because red and white grapes ferment together with some skin contact, the colour is deeper than a pale pressed rosé. It shows red berries, cherry and plum on the nose, with dried herbs and an earthy edge. The palate is dry and fruity, with gentle grip and a fresh, savoury finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. It suits roast pork, poultry and grilled vegetables.
