Azul y Garanza make this Navarra orange wine from Garnacha Blanca, fermented on skins and aged six months in clay amphorae. The amphora ageing gives a savoury, textured style with dried apricot, orange peel and a nutty, herbal grip.
Description
Azul y Garanza farm organically in Navarra, in the north of Spain, where the climate runs warm and dry with cool nights coming off the surrounding hills. This wine is made from Garnacha Blanca, a white Grenache that holds acidity and builds texture well under skin contact. The grapes are fermented on their skins, drawing tannin, colour and phenolic structure out of the skins and into the wine, which is what gives orange wine its grip and savoury character. It then spends six months in clay amphorae. Unglazed clay allows a slow, gentle exchange of oxygen through the porous walls without adding any oak flavour, which softens the tannins and develops a dried fruit, nutty depth while keeping the wine mineral and direct. Made naturally with minimal intervention. The colour is deep amber. The nose shows dried apricot, orange peel and dried herbs with an almond and beeswax note from the oxidative handling, and the palate is dry and firmly textured with a long, savoury, gently tannic finish. Serve at 12 to 14 degrees in a wide glass. Good with roast chicken, pork and hard cheeses.
