Description
Azpilicueta Reserva is a classic Rioja blend of Tempranillo with Graciano and Mazuela, made from the winery's own Fuenmayor vineyard, a large plot of over 800 hectares planted at different altitudes and orientations. These varied microclimates allow the same fruit to develop different qualities by site, giving the blender material to build complexity. Rioja's temperate climate, moderated by the surrounding sierras, ripens the Tempranillo while Graciano adds acidity and aromatic lift. The wine is aged sixteen months in French and American oak barrels, where the American oak contributes vanilla and sweet spice and the slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins in the traditional Reserva style, followed by further bottle age before release. It is intense ruby with developing tile coloured reflections. The nose offers vanilla, quince and red berries over tobacco and leather. The palate is medium bodied and supple, the tannins resolved, with a savoury, elegant finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It is a versatile red for roast lamb and grilled meats.
