Azpilicueta Origen is a Rioja Crianza built from Tempranillo grown around Fuenmayor on three estates between 500 and 600 metres. Eighteen months in French oak give a medium-bodied red of red cherry, sweet spice and vanilla over a savoury, classic Rioja frame.
Description
Azpilicueta draws the Tempranillo for Origen from vineyards around Fuenmayor in Rioja Alta, on three estates lying between 500 and 600 metres above sea level. The sites differ in soil, from alluvial and clay-iron ground at San Cristóbal and Los Cabezos to limestone-rich alluvium at La Tahola, and that mix of textures lends the blend both fruit and freshness. The altitude and the cool nights of the upper Ebro valley slow ripening, preserving the bright acidity that defines classic Rioja. After a traditional fermentation the wine matures 18 months in French oak, the Crianza ageing that rounds the tannins and layers vanilla, sweet spice and a gentle toast over the fruit through slow contact with the wood. The colour is bright cherry red. The nose shows red berries and cherry with vanilla, clove and a faint leather note from the barrel. The palate is medium-bodied and smooth, with supple tannins, red fruit and a savoury, slightly earthy finish in the familiar Rioja mould. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It is an easy match for roast lamb, grilled pork and Manchego.
