Azpilicueta makes this Rioja from Tempranillo, the founding grape of the historic Fuenmayor house. Aged five months in oak, Instinto is a fresh, fruit-forward red of red cherry, plum and a light oak spice.
Description
Azpilicueta is a long-established Rioja house from Fuenmayor, named for Félix Azpilicueta, who played a part in the development of the modern Rioja region in the late nineteenth century. Instinto is made from Tempranillo, the backbone grape of Rioja, grown on the clay and limestone soils of the appellation under a climate that balances Atlantic and Mediterranean influences. The wine is aged five months in oak, a short maturation that settles the tannin and adds a light spice and vanilla edge while keeping the fruit fresh and forward, giving an easy, approachable style for drinking young. The colour is a bright cherry red. The nose shows red cherry, red berries and plum with dried herbs and a gentle oak note. The palate is medium bodied at 14 percent, with soft tannin, fresh acidity and a clean, fruit-led finish. Serve at 16 degrees in a standard red glass. It is a versatile everyday red that works across roast and grilled meats.
